the season, today, monday, november 25th, 2013. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. i'm savannah guthrie. >> i'm david gregory. happy to be here. matt is off today. i'm here with al roker and natalie morales as well. >> did you guys see the game? it ended after midnight. >> yeah, 12:20 a.m. >> horrible first half. tom brady did it again. i woke up for the end. >> perfect. >> perfect timing. >> that was just an amazing second half. >> and weather, a big factor in the game. >> always about the weather with you. listen, the weather is already the top story this morning because we have a big winter storm that could impact tens of millions of holiday travelers. we have full coverage including dylan dreyer and tom costello on the roads and the airports. but al, we will begin with you. >> before this thing is over it will effect 25 states, 40

million people and of course it will culminate with thanksgiving day or wednesday travel right before thanksgiving. we have winter weather advisories, winter storm warnings, that area of pink is the icy conditions we're going to see. this storm will transfer its energy to the gulf. tons of moisture available to it. so by early tuesday morning we're looking at heavy thunderstorms, wind and rain, snow developing to the north. during the day it lifts up inland so that the heavy rain will stay along the coast as you get to the north and west. by early wednesday morning it's mostly snow and then by wednesday evening snow showers, cold, windy conditions behind this system and look at the rainfall amounts. we are talking 5 to 7 inches of rain through the south. as you get up along the east coast we're looking at anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain and look at the snow. we're talking about 3 to 6 inches. some areas as much as a foot. interior sections of

pennsylvania and new york. the big story the icing conditions making their way into the northern dallas area on into arkansas. we have dylan dreyer right now live in dallas and dylan, temperatures hovering just above freezing. if it drops much, it's going to be a nightmare. >> reporter: that's absolutely right, al. this is our saving grace. we have stayed above freezing in dallas. this storm system is being blamed for 13 deaths. most of those because of the dangerous road conditions. to protect and serve. and push. a police officer helps out in new mexico. across the southwest, it was best to stay off the roads. spinouts and pileups. too many to count. >> it was good when i got here. now it is sleet and windy. >> reporter: over the weekend, the same storm system lashed california with heavy rain which

led to heavy flooding. and one helicopter rescue. strong gusts ripped down power lines. the wind fuelling a wildfire north of san francisco. and then there's the snow. 15 inches in parts of nevada. great for ski resorts, but dangerous driving in oklahoma, texas and new mexico. now millions of holiday travelers are in the part of the storm are worried about the travel plans. a driver in oklahoma has advice worth following. >> go slow and keep your distance. >> reporter: as the east braces itself, preparations can be measured in cords of wood. >> we watch the weather and anticipate people coming. >> reporter: now this area here in dallas is called the high five. it is five levels of chris crossing overpasses. it is a really good thing we

stayed just above freezing in dallas. the bridges and overpasses that freeze first. we escaped that threat here in dallas, but we are now seeing some of the heaviest freezing rain from just northeastern texas right across arkansas. it is glazing the roads and we're being told and getting reports it is a sheet of ice. we certainly are seeing travel conditions just to the north of here and that means that the holiday travel week is off to a horrible start. >> dylan, thank you very much. expect delays and cancellations. the storm makes its way from dallas and up the east coast. we have tom cost tekos tecost t with the latest at reagan. >> reporter: david, good morning.

a balmy 25 degrees here in the nation's capitol. we have smooth sailing around the east coast and mid-atlantic but that's going to change in the coming days. 3 million people are taking to the skies. we have about 340 flight cancellations today according to flightaware.com. 650 cancellations yesterday. so far today at dallas, 300 flights have been cancelled. that's about 180 departures and 104 arrivals. 170 american eagle flights cancelled as well. dallas is a big choke point we will be watching. take a look at the cam from reagan international airport here in washington. so far today it's going to be a nice day but that's going to change in the coming hours. heavy rain and heavy wind across the mid-atlantic up into the east coast and we'll be watching closely, everything from washington to new york to boston. the mid-section of the country as well. chicago, st. louis. in the coming hours and days this is going to change dramatically with rain and heavy wind and snow as well. guys, back to you.

tom costello in washington for us this morning. thanks. >> now to politics. the fallout with the historic nuclear deal with iran. critics are already lining up. andrea mitchell is our nbc chief correspondent and is on the story. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the iran deal came together after a year after secret talks between top u.s. officials and iran all without the knowledge of israel or other key american allies. in the wake of the iran deal the big question this morning, what next? >> it's the effort to get the comprehensive agreement which will require enormous steps in terms of verification, transparency and accountability. >> reporter: the agreement temporarily freezes the nuclear program for six months. in return iran gets what the white house calls modest sanctions relief. >> the burden is on iran to prove to the world that it's nuclear program will be exclusively for peaceful purposes.

>> reporter: but israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu quickly condemned the agreement. >> it's a historic mistake. >> reporter: the president called netanyahu sunday but they disagree on the threat and the goal. the obama administration wants to prevent iran from developing a nuclear weapon but netanyahu wants to stop them from having the capability to even produce one. >> we think it's important to keep the pressure up. not to ease pressure before you get them through the heavy lifting before they dismantle their centerfuges. >> reporter: on this saudi arabia agrees with israel and many worry the threat isn't diminished. >> i just want to see this all the way through. they now have nuclear weapons and i don't want to see that happen in iran. >> reporter: even some experts remain skeptical. >> you're not going to know how significant, whether this is the historic breakthrough many

claimed or a historic mistake for at least another six months. >> andrea, you mentioned there were secret talks that went on for a year with the u.s. officials and iranian counterparts. what can you tell us about that? >> well these all went on with bill burns and other leaders in the gulf country and all without the knowledge of the arab leaders, israel and the western powers as well. israel, netanyahu was told by the president in september and that's why he has been so fiercely angry at the united states. that as well as the saudis. >> thank you so much. a deal tied to u.s. involvement in afghanistan hit a road block this morning. natalie is here with that. >> good morning to you all.

enable u.s. troops to operate in the country beyond next year, but afghan president karzai indicated it may have that wait. richard engel is in eastern afghanistan with the latest on this on going debate. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, we just finished a battlefield circulation with commander of u.s. troops in this part of eastern afghanistan. he showed us how afghan troops are now leading the fight and that he used to have about 50 outposts in this area and now american troops only hold about 13 bases including this one. this is one of the so-called enduring bases. bases that could stay on in this country beyond 2014 if the government in kabul and washington approve a joint security deal that could see thousands of american troops staying in this country for years to come. over the weekend, a group of tribal elders in kabul decided they want this deal. they want u.s. troops to stay because it's good for security. it helps the afghan security forces fight al qaeda and fight the taliban but then afghanistan's president said not

yet. he won't sign the deal until the united states shows more signs of good faith and does more, in his words, to bring security to this country. for now it seems this joint security deal and the future of american troops in this country is on hold. natalie. shootings will be released today. the report comes almost a year after a gunman took the lives of 20 students and six staff members. it was expected to be released in june but was pushed back to the fall. families of the victims were briefed in advance of the report being released later today. the vatican for the first time publicly unveiled a handful of bone fragments reportedly belonging to the first pope, st. peter. they were displayed during a mass sunday. pope francis prayed before the bone fragments at the start of the service and then clutched

the case in his arms for several minutes. no pope has ever definitively declared they belonged to peter. some archaeologists dispute the findings. as you heard it was a comeback for the ages, the battle of the quarterbacks as peyton manning faced tom brady on "sunday night football. "this lived up to the hype. the denver broncos lead the new england patriots 24-0 at halftime, but the pats came roaring back. new england took the lead when edelman got a touchdown. the game went into overtime and it was a critical mistake by denver's tony carter accidentally touching the ball after a punt. the equivalent of a fumble there. new england rae covered and the pats were left with an easy 31 yard field goal attempt. gostkowski kicks it in. a game that ended after midnight at 12:20 a.m. pats win it 34-31. i think the celebration is still ongoing. a lot of us bleary-eyed.

"today" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is here with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. this is something we wanted to warn you about, because clearly, this keeps on happening. can you imagine just walking down the street, minding your own business, when somebody punches you in the face for no reason at all? it's called the knockout game. teenagers knocking people out for the fun of it. they even target women and children. now cases are piling up, and police across the country are on high alert. this morning, you're going to see how vicious it gets. watch this woman walking down

the street. a stranger runs up and clocks her from behind, a sucker punch so brutal, the victim lays on the sidewalk, unable to move. in new jersey, it appears these guys filmed their own attack. >> oh! >> the suspects laughing and bragging about it. >> quitter! >> in pennsylvania, watch this man on the right side of the screen. a group of teenagers knock him out in broad daylight. no warning at all. he drops face down on to the curb. the victim, this school teacher, who was simply walking home. >> i was hit with one punch that knocked me to the cold concrete. my body and face were bruised. it's a horrific thing to see, and i'm fortunate that i'm alive here to tell you about it. >> police fear the knockout game has been spreading with cases from san diego to st. louis and chicago. in syracuse, two men were killed in possible knockout cases.

in new york city, police are investigating at least seven attacks and have made one arrest. >> it appears these are just random acts of violence. there's no robbery. it's just simply youths making the decision they're going to try to punch somebody out, sometimes as simple as a $5 bet between themselves. >> like 17-year-old marvel weaver, who admits he played a marvel weaver who admits he played a version of knockout using a stun gun. he was caught and is now in jail. >> it's just a lesson learned. people go along with it and one thing leads to another and it just goes all downhill. >> reporter: downhill for the teens who do it and the victims who continue to suffer. >> these kids are acting maybe not thinking and not knowing the consequence of what could happen. >> reporter: here in new york city, the man arrested for playing the knockout game has been charged with a hate crime. police believe the victim was targeted because he's jewish.

antarctica. that powerful storm and high winds could delay their quest to reach the south pole. >> speaking of weather, we want to get to the dangerous storm in this country. al has the latest. >> it's responsible for 13 deaths. let's show you what is happening now. you can see the system now making its way up the coast. by tomorrow afternoon it's heavy rain along the coast. massive snow back to the west and as we make our way into wednesday it's all rain but, again, windy conditions and snow. in fact, right now ron is in oklahoma city with what's going on there. started the day with icing, ron. what's happening right now. >> reporter: good morning from oklahoma city. that rain overnight coated the cars and now we have ice. all that means rush hour traffic has snarled up. 20 vehicle accidents reported on the interstates. yesterday, we had 6 to 10 inches of snow in the oklahoma area.

it is a good coating of ice, which is a problem on the cars, but also on the sidewalks. you need to step outside and be careful so you don't have a trip to the doctor. back to you guys. >> thank you, ron. this system is really going to be a mess for the next 72 hours. >> al, thank you very much. a powerful storm in antarctica is impacting prince harry's quest for the south pole. we have ben at buckingham palace with more. >> reporter: good morning. after several delays with bad weather, prince harry's team have finally landed in antarctica. today, prince harry has been reflecting on the time in the south ahead of the race for the south pole. the plane touched down on the ice. immediately, the harsh conditions that can effect the

antarctic were felt by his team. >> it was high. pouring over the edge. suddenly rock bottom. the weather forecast seems to be getting worse. >> reporter: the teams were able to train parts of the weekend. but the weather meant much of their time was confined to being indoors. >> i know it is frightening, but i have four limbs and i'm fine. almost fine -- up here. these guys have all these issues and life-changing issues that are hard for them. >> reporter: for the team u.s. and other competitors, their departure was delayed by the weather in antarctica. they were finally able to depart friday. >> wow! >> reporter: i arrived at the base station for an expedition at south pole years ago.

my weather was better. >> we have ohave woken up to he. >> reporter: we encountered the dangerous conditions on the ice. >> it means i can help these guys without creating more awareness for them. then, it is worth it at minus 50. you have to get through that for a good cause. >> reporter: well, i can tell you from my experience in antarctica, summertime can throw wild weather at you. we had confirmation that prince harry and their team are planning their trek for the south pole tomorrow. we have word that he will have a challenge to grow this beard. >> he just started this last week. >> that's impressive. >> that's impressive. >> yesterday. >> ben, thank you so much. let's get more of al's forecast

66 for santa rosa. have a great one. this thanksgiving week, as we have done for the last decade, you have a short period of time. what does this mean for you? >> ten years ago this very day, we launched the thanksgiving program on the "today" show. it's been a guardian angel to many of these children. we did these stories of our children. 46 of them were on the "today" show. 43 of them survived. sadly, three of them did not make it.

but all the moms and dads really got a wake-up call on the "today" show. they were told by their doctors in their local hospitals that they weren't going to make it. some had already chosen funeral music and were taking pictures of them because they wouldn't see them pretty soon. and they came here and they survived. what's important to know, not those local hospitals -- they're not bad hospitals. they're very good hospitals but they're only working with what they know. with st. jude's, we're working with what nobody knows because we're a research center and cancer center under one roof. this is a celebration of what we have accomplished in ten years. >> reporter: nothing better than the celebration when you look at the faces with the pictures there. >> absolutely. >> reporter: coming up in a little bit, we'll have a little bit more. and we'll meet some of the children up close and personal and tell you a little bit more about, really, the amazing successes and in some cases 40% of those cancers are now being

good morning once again to you kerry. >> good morning. this is what they call the af r alphabet wall and it's quite profound because each child takes a letter and writes what they're going for. >> k is for khemo and a child writes it makes you feel tired and bad and especially cute because chemo is ch and not k. but we have been following what the children go through here and what the doctors and the staff are doing as they're saving lives. the future looks bright for 17-year-old summer wilson. >> i'm not serena williams but i can beat my dad. >> reporter: she was one of the first patients we introduced you to for thanks and giving. as an infant, summer was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer that appeared as a tumor in her arm. back then, her mom was given no

hope by doctors in her hometown. >> the best case scenario that we were given was take her home and love her. we'll probably need to amputate her arm but she's not going to make it. >> reporter: after treatment she received at st. jude, not only were they able to save her life but her arm too. >> it's rewarding to prove someone wrong. >> reporter: like summer, every holiday season you see these beautiful faces on tv, online, and in print, often with celebrities like jennifer anniston, robin williams and sean white. >> our discoveries helped drive the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80%. >> reporter: they're all testaments of the war against childhood cancer these kids fight every day. doctors all over the world send their toughest cases to st. jude. out of the 46 children that we introduced you to in the last decade, three have lost their

lives. 6-year-old clare, 8-year-old nicholas jeffreys. >> i want to see some of your moves. >> there you go. >> and just recently 11-year-old ryan christian. those who pass inspire researchers to find better treatment and their efforts are paying off. >> just in the last decade we pushed cure rates from 80% to over 90% and we are confident that what we're learning from the project is going to allow us to do that for other types of childhood cancer. >> reporter: that's music to the ears of the lewis family whose baby was diagnosed back in 2005. >> it's just unexplainable to hear that news that your child has cancer. >> reporter: today lauren is 9 years old, cancer free and giving back to the hospital herself. and lauren is here with us right now. so you're giving back.

what exactly are you doing? >> i'm raising money for st. jude. >> how do you do that? you're so young. >> i design clothes and use it for a fashion show. >> you design clothes? >> yes, sir. >> where did you get that idea? >> in my head. >> really? are they dresses or shirts? what do you come up with? >> well, i do both. >> who does the selling, mom? >> no, we have dream makers that make the clothes. >> wonderful. that's great. mom, i know this is a huge celebration for you but take me back. when you heard that lauren had cancer, what was that experience like? do you remember what it felt like to hear those words? >> absolutely. it's very hard to forget. it's devastating just to be told that your child has cancer. and for us, it happened very quickly. we were given the diagnosis and we were sent straight to st.

to be looking at a lot of wet weather along the east coast. >> yeah, and wind. >> wind as well. >> and then inland sections from upstate new york, western p.a., some areas picking up to a foot or more of snow. >> it's going to be hard to get around. call your airport ahead of time and make sure you check in on your flight. >> it's a nightmare as it normally is on a wednesday before thanksgiving. >> yeah. >> but add this to the mix and it makes it more dicey. >> 43 million people will be traveling on thanksgiving. that's a lot of people. please be careful. check the weather ahead of time. there was controversy, some at the american music awards. >> there's always controversy at the award shows. >> the line-up they had. every super star in music did a performance. katy perry opened the show singing a song called unconditionally. she was dressed as a japanese geisha. take a look and see what you think. pumpkin pie this thanksgiving, don't worry, you have some options. here's what's open. bob evans will welcome customers from 7:00 to 2:00. boston markets open as well and expected to serve a million customers. cracker barrel and golden corral will also be opening their doors. and if you're looking for some red meat, the steakhouse is taking reservations. more retailers are finding this holiday season may be a tough sell. big store chains, including walmart and kohl's, say that it is deal or no deal that americans are not willing to spend without deep discounts. in many cases, shoppers are looking for deals before they even walk into the store. analysts say that is one reason consumers are seeing big sales events early and more often than in past years. it is an annual tradition in the nation's capital. it is happening today. the capitol christmas tree, also known as the people's tree, arrives this morning. it's an 88-foot spruce from washington state. it will get the same decking out as past trees, 10,000 lights, and this year, 9,000 handcrafted

friends, two viewers who told us they would like madeline's help as well. madeline, this is kind of an interesting concept. we're trying to stay the same. >> right. just don't gain is what we're going to do over the next six weeks. this is the time of year you want to put on the stretch pants, the baggy dress, call it a day and say, i'll worry about it in january. if you cut the creep now, you're mindful. you can have a great holiday and indulge if you pay a little attention. >> how much weight do people usually gain during the holiday? >> you see different amounts. some gain five, some gain a few, but what you gain you typically don't lose over the next year. you can't go by averages and you know yourself what you gain. >> you're a new mom. you took off that baby weight. how long did that take you to take that off? >> i would say probably six months. >> look what you got for it. >> oh, my god. are you an eggnog drinker? >> yes. we couldn't wait until the supermarket started selling it for the season. yes, yes.

>> i would say a few. maybe two or three. >> i have five. >> do you? >> yeah. then i struggle in january to get rid of the sugar also, because i like sweets. >> you're not alone because that's when all the commercials come out for the weight loss. they all come out in january. >> the best thing to start heading this off is to learn to barter. say, i'm going to have one item so i don't have that. i'm going to have a roll so i won't have that extra glass of wine. you want to be mindful. think before you eat. >> they're going to add up. last night i did something i've never, ever done before, the first pre-party for the season. it was a beautiful buffet. they were passing around truffle french fries. i had one bite. i said, i'm going to see if i can do it. i took one bite and put it down and looked at it. i thought, okay, that's a start. i was thinking about cutting the creep. >> and you had that under your belt. the more you succeed at being
